A Weekly Weblog by Will Raus

I’m probably late to the party here, as it appears that these things have been out for a good long time, but it doesn’t matter, because I figure that I should share them anyway. A friend of mine tipped me off to these a couple days ago, and it’s one of the more interesting and unique music-related things I’ve seen on the net recently.

One of the more notable parts of the Touhou series, almost as ubiquitous and irreplaceable as the balls-out difficulty and quirky all-girl cast, is the absolutely fantastic music that comes with the series. There is some excellent music attached to the Touhou series, and every game brings with it an entirely new soundtrack. And with any well-known game music comes remixes. Hell, there’s a very large and extremely organized community out there dedicated to nothing but new takes on old video game music. (If you haven’t checked out OCRemixes, I hereby order you to do so now.) However, that’s not all there is out there.

Apparently, there’s this guy who goes by the moniker of VIOTEX, who somehow decided that if there’s anything Touhou music needs, it’s to be mixed with hip-hop. And while I’m gonna throw it out there and say that I’m not especially a fan of most hip-hop, it’s amazing how well some of it goes with the music that’s selected here. Apparently a lot of it is up on Nicovideo, which I still haven’t figured out how to work (if anyone wants to drop me a line and gimme a hand, post a comment), but there’s a solid amount of it available on Youtube, both in voiced and instrumental form.

Just for the hell of it, I used listentoyoutube.com to rip everything I could find of this guy’s work to MP3. As a result, most everything I could find is available in MP3 form on my Mediafire account, located here:

Will’s Mediafire (Seven Deadly Sins)

EDIT: The MP3s have been replaced with iPod and other MP3 player-friendly WMA files. They’re about twice as big, but they play, which is better than nothing.

If there’s anything I’ve missed (other work, other similar stuff by different artists, etc), drop it in the comments. Also, if anyone would like to point out a favorite that they have, please post a comment. Personally, I’m rather fond of either of the U.N. Owen Was Her? (Flandre Scarlet’s theme) mixes (both vocal and instrumental), as well as the voiced mix of Voyage 1969 (Eirin’s Theme), which has the addition of a little bit of archived NASA flight control audio footage, an interesting touch.

Until Next Time…

For the vocal mixes, I really liked Broken Moon x Right Right Now Now, Easter Dream x Give It Up, and U.N. Owen Was Her? x Without Me. I also enjoyed both the vocal and instrumental mixes of Chinese Tea x We Got The.

I should check back to see if this guy has done any more stuff. I know for a while he was doing some stuff with other soundtracks, but I’m not fully sure.
